Bamburgh Castle with cricket being played on Bamburgh village green

Alnwick Castle has beautiful State rooms which contain fine furniture and paintings by Canaletto, Van Dyck and Titian. The newly created Alnwick gardens are a delight too.

On the left is Bamburgh Castle on a lovely August day with village cricket being played on the green. Beyond the castle are long stretches of golden sand looking out to the Farne Isles and to the north Holy Island. Bamburgh Castle sits on an outcrop of basalt standing majestically above Bamburgh village.

Visit the Bamburgh Castle website.

Driving down the coastal trail from Bamburgh you will find delightful villages such as Beadnell, Craster and Alnmouth and further stretches of sandy beaches and rolling sand dunes.

Shown right is the full length of Bamburgh Castle.
Dunstanburgh Castle is shown below. A pleasant walk from the fishing village of Craster with waves crashing on rocky shores this was the fortress of John the Gaunt. The castle was a Lancastrian stronghold in The War of the Roses and was reduced to its present state by cannon in that period.
